7 November 1967
Mr. Dionisio Garrido Buendía
MADRID
Dear Sir:
Not long ago I telephoned you and had the pleasure of speaking with your wife, who will surely have passed on to you what I told her. You will remember that I am the gentleman who used to type part of the documents for the gentlemen from Ummo until they left the Earth.
You will forgive me for not having written to you before, but some business keeps me away from Madrid for long periods. On my return I now intend to put my papers in order, and when I find the diary, which with all the business of the move I have among the parcels of books and papers, I will send you some things I have of yours.
I also want to tell you something: when they dictated things to me for the various gentlemen with whom they had dealings, sometimes after I had done the work and the drawings and corrected the formulas and the typing errors I might have made, two or three days later they would order me not to send them to the person concerned, and I would ask them what I should do with them, and they answered whatever I liked, or tear them up. But I filed them.
I say this because I remember that I have some sheets which were addressed to you at the beginning, and in some cases they replaced them with others, which are the ones you received. I do not remember now how many, but I will tell you when I check, for I have them in my possession, and there lies the doubt: I do not know whether I should give them to you now that they have gone (for I certainly have a copy), or whether it would be improper, since they would have had their reasons. I think the latter is less reasonable, and that if they were addressed to you and they are not here, it is not right for me to keep them.
I also have several more documents from persons who refused to go on talking with them or went away on a journey. Some of these sheets I have given to other
correspondents, because I already have copies and they will be of less use to me than to you. Among them there are some which I did not even type myself, because lately one more gentleman helped them by typing things for them, but whether because they did not want him to know addresses of persons I knew, or for some other reason, they gave me some of these documents for me to send.
For example, I enclose a letter that never got sent to a gentleman who went abroad, and about whom they told me to stop the mailings. It does not say anything new, but since I have it to hand I give it to you; I have copied it because I had no carbon copy of it.
I still know nothing about the gentlemen from UMMO. The other day I read that in North America they had seen a flying saucer, but they themselves told me many times that not all those ships were theirs, and they even hinted that many of the newspaper reports were people's hallucinations or confusions with aircraft and balloons.
I repeat to you, Don Dionisio, what I told your wife when I spoke with her; I do not know what to do about this matter. If a year or so goes by without our knowing anything of them, I have proofs and I will apply to a Ministry. Of course, on top of that they may ask me why I did not declare it before, but you know it was not right.
I am going to: confess something to you, and you may perhaps acknowledge that I am right. You will not be offended if I tell you that I have often thought, and have discussed it with my wife, whether you might not be their link with the government. For of all those they wrote to, the only police commissioner is you. If I am right, it would almost take a weight off my shoulders, for I prefer not to get mixed up in such a grave matter.
However, I remember that one day I asked Mr. Dei number ninety-eight, and he answered me very curtly: That brother of yours (he was referring to you, for they call us brothers among ourselves) is not involved in relations of that kind with the Spanish government ).
This matter, Don Dionisio, has changed my whole life. Sometimes I do not know whether it has all been a dream, were it not for my wife and my brother-in-law, who have witnessed everything. Sometimes my brother-in-law, who has come to believe, doubts again and says to me: Might they not belong to the government itself, or be foreigners with an aim we do not know, and you have served as a guinea pig or as an alibi for some strange affair? Then I doubt for a moment, but I remember so many things that do not fit, that do not agree with this point of view, for then that would seem to me as fanciful as the other thing or more, and more and more questions are left hanging in the air that cannot be answered if one believes that. Besides, I say that if it were so they would not present themselves as coming from another planet, for that provokes even more scepticism than the other, and more suspicions of falsehood. Besides, whoever has known them and spoken with them and seen their kindness, their understanding, realizes that it is not possible for them to be lying. The others cannot understand that; that is why I said what I said to your wife. The best thing is to keep quiet in front of others, for on top of everything we are going to make fools of ourselves or they will take us for madmen. Besides, I would have done the same if two years ago a gentleman had come to me telling me that "tale". The best thing is for each one to live his own life and play dumb; since this matter I have changed my way of thinking a great deal.
Well: I promise to send you those documents. But since I have to attend to several other gentlemen it will take a few days.
