UMMO-Ciencias

A site devoted to the rational study of the UMMO affair

Recordings made by Rafael Farriols (or at his request) of people previously located and interviewed by him who had witnessed the San José de Valderas sighting

It is no secret that the Ummo case has a very bad press among those who at one time called themselves “Scientific Ufologists” (a term –to say “concept” would perhaps be going too far– that had its heyday years ago but now seems somewhat dated; Ad Occasum Tendimus Omnes). This atmosphere of open hostility has been joined in more recent times by a veritable army, more numerous every day, of individuals who have formed a kind of new priestly caste that pontificates under the name of “Rational” Sceptics, and who group together in “associations” that have sprung up like mushrooms.

Time is undoubtedly a very precious commodity, and at ummo-ciencias we have no intention of wasting it. Although many (not all) of the learned “works” on the Ummo case by authors of this kind are crammed with objective falsehoods, gross errors, almost childish pseudo-arguments, more or less crude fallacies, manipulation (or blatant ignorance) of data, logical contradictions –even within the same article–, etc., and would be easy to refute, it is not our intention to undertake that tiresome task; for the reason given, and because of the little use of dialectics against deeply rooted prejudices or other blocking mental mechanisms. But above all –and any reader willing to face the long and tedious check can verify this– because not a single one of those articles, incredible as it may seem, actually discusses, comments on, analyses or refutes a single line of the thousands of pages that make up the content of the Ummite reports.

It is obvious that (beyond parroting the hilarious “argument” that Peña “was an engineer” and “had taught Physics”) these seasoned exposers of frauds have not read a single paragraph of the Ummite corpus, or have read it like the dilettante who looks at the dust jackets of books. They are simply not interested, or they do not understand it, or both. A fitting comparison would be the publication of a scientific study on some newly discovered Sanskrit manuscripts that receives fierce, coarse and furious criticism, even with personal insults towards its authors, and which turns out to have been written… by an ignoramus who knows no Sanskrit and, in fact, has not the slightest interest in classical languages.

One of the most popular refrains regarding the “fraud” of the Ummo case is the “falseness” of the 1967 San José de Valderas landing. A well-known author, for example, was “astonished” that, 40 years after the supposed landing, while strolling aimlessly one day through the streets of San José de Valderas, he had started asking the passers-by he met whether they knew anything about the famous UFO or knew anyone who had seen it or heard of it, and… “nobody” had the faintest idea about it… What more “proof” was needed to expose the “hoax”!...

More than one of these conspicuous ummophobic investigators at one time set about “summoning” Rafael Farriols and Antonio Ribera to “prove” that the witnesses appearing in their famous book Un Caso Perfecto “existed”, barely disguising their accusation that they had made it all up… Little could these defiant ufologists imagine that both authors (whose silence they interpreted as irrefutable evidence of “guilt”) received their diatribes –if they ever heard of them– with the most absolute indifference or, at best, with a condescending smile… (We know this for a fact).

As early as 2001, the researcher Antonio Moyano, in his excellent article "El ovni de Ummo: Hablan los protagonistas" (Enigmas, no. 4, 2001, p. 32), demolished some of Jordán Peña's claims to authorship of the “fraud” of the San José de Valderas case, even managing to locate and interview by telephone the “non-existent” Emilita, a girl aged 12 in 1967 and a pupil at the Colegio Amor de Dios, on the outskirts of San José de Valderas, who was one of the main witnesses of the landing, as reflected in the book by Farriols and Ribera.

At ummo-ciencias, as at ummo-sciences, we have for years had copies of the sound recordings made in 1968 of the (“non-existent”) witnesses of the San José de Valderas landing –plus one related to the 1966 episode in Aluche–. It was the precise transcriptions of these interviews that were incorporated into the maligned book Un Caso Perfecto by the authors mentioned. The digitised recordings we now present have been obtained from the ‘cassettes’ on which Rafael Farriols himself made, decades ago, (obviously analogue) copies of the original recordings made with an open-reel tape recorder, which are held by his family together with the rest of his archive. Some of these recordings, in fact, were already published on the French website https://oumo.fr/1913 in March 2018, and had previously been made public on the ummo-ciencias discussion list, among other forums.
